New Zealand prohibits guests from swimming with dolphins

The ban applies to all dolphin-related travel services, fearing that tourists are "in love with them".

Environmental authorities say the new law requires all dolphins to stop swimming in the Bay of Islands (west of North Island) for three years. Boat tours to see dolphins are reduced from half an hour to every 20 minutes. The tour is limited to the morning or afternoon, giving the dolphins a period of time not completely in contact with humans.

According to the New Zealand Ministry of Nature Conservation, in the Bay of Islands region, the bottlenose dolphin population has decreased by 66% since 1999, the mortality rate for baby dolphins increased by 75%. Currently, only 19 individuals of bottlenose dolphins regularly visit this sea.

The new regulation takes effect from July, aiming at commercial activities. The New Zealand government is considering transforming the Bay of Islands into an undersea mammal sanctuary, to prevent private boats from causing nuisance to wild dolphins.

Kiwi is not the only place to restrict contact activities with dolphins. Hawaii (USA) has considered plans to ban contact with dolphins and said that tourists disrupt their mating activities.
